The other day, a curious and well-meaning 5-year-old looked at me and said with full honesty:
“You wore that sweater yesterday!”

I smiled.

He wasn’t wrong. I had worn it the day before. And I was wearing it again—because it wasn’t dirty. I hadn’t spilled anything. I hadn’t broken a sweat or rolled down a hill. It still smelled fresh and felt cozy. So… I wore it again.

And in that moment, I realized: This isn’t just a comment about clothes. It’s a window into how early we start learning—and internalizing—the idea that clean equals new, and repetition is something to hide .

We’ve been conditioned to over-wash and over-consume, not because we’re bad people, but because we’ve rarely been taught otherwise. But here’s the truth:

And just like that, I realized how early the myth starts—that clothes can’t be worn twice in a row, that clean equals good, and repetition means shame.

At Columbus Fashion Academy, we teach kids to design clothing from pre-loved materials. But we also teach them something deeper: that fashion is a mindset. And our mindset around laundry? It’s overdue for a refresh.

Modern culture over-washes. One of the largest hidden contributors to climate change and microplastic pollution? Laundry. Most people don’t realize that every unnecessary load of laundry uses:

30–40 gallons of water
Electricity from fossil fuels
Detergents that may harm waterways
Friction that shortens the life of your clothes

And worst of all? We’re doing it out of habit, not hygiene.

Is Fashion Only for Girls? No, its not. Boys get Dressed too!

Have you ever wondered why something as simple as getting dressed is often tangled up in society's unwritten rules? Why does a universal act—one we all do every day—carry so many invisible labels? And why, even today, do we still box fashion into outdated stereotypes?

Last Friday, during our Winter session, a question from one of the girls in one of our after school classes pulled me into this very thought. She looked up at me with curious eyes and asked, "Is fashion just for girls?"

I smiled and said, "No, fashion is for everyone. Boys get dressed too, right?"

She paused, thinking deeply, then nodded. But her curiosity didn’t stop there. "Then why aren’t there any boys in our class?"

That question stuck with me long after the classroom lights dimmed. Since we launched our flagship afterschool program, "Fashion Runway Production," back in 2017, we’ve always had more girls than boys. The highest percentage of boys we’ve ever had was just 20%. That’s a 20/80 ratio—twenty percent boys, eighty percent girls. And that makes you wonder: why?

It’s not just about who signs up for class—it’s about the silent stories we’ve been told. Stories that say fashion is pink bows and glitter, that it’s a ‘girl thing.’ But fashion is so much more than that, its a holistic discipline. It’s a mirror reflecting why, who, when and how we dress as we do. It’s a life skill to be learned as it touches every one of us. We all get dressed every day.

Fashion isn’t just about clothes. It’s about values. It's about confidence, creativity, and navigating life’s highs and lows. It’s about sustainability, intentional living, and understanding the stories behind what we wear. Fashion is an expansive universe of roles—from designers and stylists to photographers, marketers, and sustainability experts. It’s not limited to the runway or the pages of glossy magazines; it’s in the fabric of our daily lives.

Here’s an irony that might surprise you: despite fashion often being labeled as ‘for girls,’ many of the most renowned designers in history—and today—are still men. Yet, this post isn’t about counting heads in the industry; it’s about challenging the status quo. Aren’t we being old-school and patriarchal when we assume fashion is for girls only? Isn’t that mindset similar to the outdated belief that women should stay home while men go out to earn a living? It’s time we recognize these biases for what they are—relics of a bygone era.

That moment in class a couple of days ago reminded me of a recent pitch presentation I delivered end of last Summer, when I asked the audience to look around and answer a simple question: "Is anyone here naked?" The room filled with laughter, but the message was clear. Fashion touches everyone. And so does the weight of overconsumption. When fashion education is funneled primarily towards girls, we rob boys of the chance to explore self-discovery, self-expression, creativity and sustainability.

Here is a twist, the few boys who did join our classes in the past years? They absolutely rocked it. Some were fashion designers, some were models, some were both. The ones who let go of outdated expectations, who dared to create and be themselves without fear of judgment—they thrived. And isn’t that the secret? When anyone, boy or girl, figures out what they love and wears it boldly, they shine.

There’s no gender in life skills. We all face challenges, celebrate wins, and yes, we all get dressed.

Historically, society has tried to box fashion into a narrow, pink-laced corner. Boys were often steered away, nudged toward ‘masculine’ pursuits, while fashion was dismissed as frivolous. But fashion is a universal language. From the tailored suits of CEOs to the athletic gear of sports icons, fashion speaks to identity, purpose, and culture—regardless of gender.

This old-fashioned thinking isn’t just outdated; it’s harmful. When boys aren’t encouraged to explore fashion, they miss out on life lessons you learn along and they continue in the circle of old habits which contributes to social, mental and environmental crisis. This problem isn’t just a ‘girl issue’—it’s a global crisis.

We’re rewriting the narrative. Fashion isn’t about fitting into a mold; it’s about breaking free from one. It’s about discovering who you are and expressing that unapologetically. Whether you’re a boy, a girl, or anywhere in between, fashion is a part of your journey. And it’s time we all started telling that story.

The Night of No Pockets

It was a cold 36-degree evening in Columbus, the kind of night that makes the Ohio Theatre glow even more inviting, its historic marquee flickering like a promise of something beautiful inside. Music. Art. Creativity.

I had picked my outfit carefully, pulling pieces from my closet that felt as luxurious as the evening ahead—a full-length suede leather skirt in a rich chocolate brown, smooth and velvety under my fingers. A silk ruffle blouse, light and fluid, perfect under the brown suede jacket with berry magenta shearling lining. It all came together beautifully—until reality set in.

No. Pockets.

Not in the skirt. Not in the jacket. Not in the blouse. Nowhere to tuck my phone, nowhere to casually rest a hand. And as if that wasn’t enough, I cinched it all together with a fabulous crunched leather muumuu belt. Gorgeous? Yes. Functional? No. But at least it was staying.

Inside the theatre, the warmth of the crowd met the heat of stage lights, and soon, I was roasting inside my perfectly curated ensemble. But the belt. The noisy, defiant belt. I couldn’t bring myself to unbuckle it—not in the middle of a breathtaking performance. So I waited.

Waited for the thunderous applause between movements, for the moment I could make my move unnoticed. When the claps finally rang through the grand theatre, I seized my chance—quickly unbuckling, slipping off the jacket, feeling an immediate wave of relief.

And suddenly, I was present again. The music swirled around me, and in my mind, my clothes—these soft, elegant, but utterly impractical clothes—began to dance above the musicians, floating, waltzing, free.

That was the moment I knew.

This was their last wear.

I vividly remember the day I stepped out of my home in Columbus wearing a long colorful vintage dress that I absolutely adore. I was simply running errands—grocery store, post office, maybe a quick coffee break. Nothing fancy, right? Two women, seeing me in full sartorial glory, stopped dead in their tracks and asked, “You are so dressed up! Where are you going?” That question, accompanied by their slightly puzzled stares, set off one of my biggest pet peeves: This is exactly why we are not truly a fashion capital.

The essence of being a “fashion capital” is about a collective culture, an everyday street-style vibe, and the confidence of individuals expressing who they truly are—day in, day out—without fear of judgment.

And yes, that includes wearing sweatpants if they make you feel unstoppable, or rocking a feather boa if that’s what lights you up. True fashion culture isn’t about high-end runways or special events alone; it’s about the way people carry themselves every single day. If people stare at you when you dare to stand out, if they try to “style bully” you—asking why you’re “so dressed up” as if the default is to conform—then we lack that fundamental, city-wide mindset of embracing individual expression.

The Neuroscience Behind Authenticity and Belonging

A lot of our behaviors—particularly around fashion and self-expression—are deeply tied to our brain’s innate wiring. Neuroscientists often speak of the social pain mechanism, where rejection or criticism from peers triggers activation in the same areas of the brain (particularly the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex) that process physical pain. In other words, a judgmental “Where are you going?” can register in our brains as a threat to our sense of belonging, prompting us to second-guess our fashion choices.

Our brains are also influenced by something called the reticular activating system (RAS) , which filters information based on what we deem important. When we live in a community where conformity is seen as the norm, we tune our RAS to pick up signals that reinforce this social rule—like disapproving stares or questions about being “too dressed up.” Over time, our behavior shifts to minimize social friction and maximize acceptance—subtly pressuring us to tone it down to fit in.

This is why, in places revered as global fashion capitals—where style is celebrated rather than policed—people develop a collective ethos of encouraging each other’s boldness. That’s not to say that Milan, Paris, or New York are without their critics, but the day-to-day street scenes do radiate more acceptance of personal style.

Why Mindset Matters More Than Marketing

Claiming to be “#3 in the nation” might generate headlines or pique investors’ interest, but if the mindset of the community does not align with artistic freedom, expression, and individuality, the label rings hollow. A fashion capital thrives on diversity of thought and expression. It’s a place where curiosity leads to personal style journeys, where the question isn’t “Why are you so dressed up?” but “You look incredible, please tell me more about your outfit!”

When we work with students at Columbus Fashion Academy, or when I go talk to youth and emerging entrepreneurs from all over the city, the central message is: Wear what you love . Fashion is self-expression rooted in knowledge of self, it has nothing to do with labels. If you don’t know who you are and what you love, you’ll be easily swayed by trends or peer pressure, missing the ultimate joy of wearing something that truly resonates. This is where we dive into deeper questions—“Why this color?”, “Why this silhouette?”, “What emotion do you feel wearing that?”, "What memories come from this sweater?". These might sound trivial, but the neuroscience shows us that when we connect emotionally with what we wear, our confidence rises, and confidence fosters creativity, resilience, and a sense of personal agency. (Bonus: we will wear pieces we love more frequently, ultimately impacting on textile waste reduction)

Building a Culture of True Expression

My dream is a Columbus—and a world—where people freely wear what they love, without fear of a sideways glance or an underhanded comment. When we cultivate that culture, we don’t need to attach a ranking to validate our city. We simply are a fashion capital, because individuals feel empowered to showcase their personal style daily.

And guess what? This doesn’t mean everyone has to wear avant-garde gowns to the grocery store. It could mean yoga pants or a T-shirt with your favorite band. It’s about intention—choosing items that speak to you, that you feel comfortable and confident in, and wearing them proudly. By doing so, you contribute to the bigger narrative that we are all unique beings who deserve to shine in our own ways.

Practical Steps Toward a Fashion-Capital Mindset

Self-Exploration : Ask “Why?” before you buy or wear something. Does it spark joy or is it driven by someone else’s standard?

The streets of São Paulo were alive before the sun even rose, vendors setting up their stalls in the early morning haze, the smell of fresh bread and strong coffee mixing with the scent of rain lingering from the night before. The city never truly slept, and as a child, neither did my curiosity.
Weekends were spent navigating the labyrinth of flea markets, where each stall was a portal to another time, another life. My hands traced the embroidered details of vintage dresses, the cool metal of forgotten brooches, the smooth leather of well-worn handbags. Even as a minor, I roamed freely through this massive metropolis, untethered by cell phones, without the constant ping of a digital world tracking my every move. The city belonged to us, and we belonged to it. It was wild and free.

For almost thirty years, this was my world. My life was intense, always moving. By twelve, I was already running my first business, unknowingly weaving the foundation for the path I walk today. Many of my days were spent at my grandmother's house, a space filled with ingenuity and survival. A single mother and the most resourceful woman I have ever known, she was years ahead of her time. Have you ever had one of those days where everything goes exactly as planned? Neither have I. So let’s talk about the day I didn’t pitch Columbus Fashion Academy at the SEA Change Final Showcase. Because, in the spirit of Opposite Day, let’s flip the narrative and tell the version that never happened.

The “Un-Pitch” That Changed Everything

Picture this: a crowded room, an eager audience, a panel of seasoned judges. The energy is electric. But in this alternate reality, I don’t walk up to the microphone. I don’t tell them about the global health crisis created by fashion—the environmental, mental, and social damage that fast fashion has unleashed on communities like ours .
I don’t tell them how, at 12 years old , I was already questioning fashion’s impact while making costume jewelry as my first business. How my Brazilian roots shaped my passion for sustainability before “sustainability” was a buzzword.
I don’t explain how Columbus Fashion Academy is turning waste into wonder , teaching kids that old clothes aren’t trash, they’re a blank canvas , and proving that fashion doesn’t have to be the enemy—it can be the revolution.
I don’t tell them that over 50,000 pieces of clothing have been diverted from landfills through our programs . That we are creating a generation of changemakers who are learning to mend, repurpose, and challenge the status quo of disposable fashion.
Instead, in this “opposite” version, I stay silent. I let fashion remain exactly what it has been—a machine of excess, a system of waste, a business model built on exploitation. But that’s not what happened.

On that stage last Fall, I did speak. I did pitch. I did tell the world that fashion has been built backwards and that we are flipping it on its head.

The true beginning of this story stretches back years, to a time when an auntie sat quietly in the audience, watching her niece and nephew take the stage at one of our Fashion Runway Production shows. She had heard about the program during family gatherings, but nothing compared to experiencing it firsthand.
One moment stood out to her—a painfully shy young boy, her nephew, stepping onto the runway, frozen in fear yet determined to walk under the glow of the spotlights, hundreds of unfamiliar eyes fixed on him. We always remind our students that the audience is filled with love—family, friends, people rooting for them. But to them, especially in that moment, it can feel like stepping into the unknown, staring into a sea of strangers. Yet, step by step, he walked, his confidence growing with each stride. That night, his aunt saw something shift in him, a new resilience taking root.
Fast forward to a few weeks ago, and I receive a message from an unfamiliar name, attached to a picture of a magnificent wooden table. It was more than just a table—it was a masterpiece. Carved from wood and crafted in Italy nearly a century ago. The tag read 1930. I wouldn’t learn its full history until later, but even at first glance, I knew it held stories within its grain.
The sender wondered if Columbus Fashion Academy could use such a remarkable piece. Could we? Of course. This was a table meant to create art upon. A place where hands would shape fabric, where young minds would sketch, design, and bring visions to life. I eagerly said yes. Then came the logistics. This table, as magnificent as it was, would never fit in my Honda Pilot.
As she took measurements, I reached out to our online community, seeking a reliable mover. Bootstrapping means every expense is carefully considered. Two names surfaced, and I booked one to pick up the table from a boutique in the Short North and deliver it to our storage space north of Upper Arlington . Curious, I asked my donor how she had heard of us. Her response stunned me.
She had been to our shows—many of them. She named her niece and nephew and recounted the Columbus Museum of Art showcase last March, where over 500 attendees watched young designers unveil their creations in the largest kids fashion show run in history, 103 models in one run. She had witnessed these kids' growth, their confidence blooming alongside their creativity. She understood our mission deeply—the importance of pre-loved clothing, the power of repurposing, the impact of sustainable fashion. She saw firsthand how we extend the life of garments, keeping them out of landfills and transforming them into something new. And then she shared something that stopped me in my tracks.

My body was still fighting off a lingering cold from last weekend’s walk along Lake Erie, but today wasn’t a day to stay in bed.

I wrapped myself in warmth—the kind that comes from both layers and confidence. A soft, velvet suit, the kind that feels like luxury but moves like comfort. Over it, a vintage Jordache ‘70s faux fur coat, and on my head, my trusted Vivienne Westwood beret. People always see me wearing it, and for good reason. It’s not just a hat; it’s a statement. As I pulled into the parking lot, I was grateful—really grateful—for good event planning. Clear signage led the way, sparing me from wandering around in the bitter cold searching for the entrance. Little details like that? They make all the difference.
Walking inside was like stepping into a room filled with warmth—not just from the heating, but from the people. Familiar faces, genuine smiles. Fellow minority business owners, Chamber staff , and longtime acquaintances. These weren’t just professional contacts; they were people I truly admire. And if you’ve ever wondered why I hold the Columbus Chamber in such high regard, it’s simple: They care.
For years, I’ve worked with them in different capacities—first as staff for corporation and nonprofit organizations in town, then as minority-owned, woman-owned, immigrant-owned entrepreneur. No matter the role, the people remained the same: authentic, invested, and passionate about supporting local businesses. They don’t just show up, check a box, and clock out. They are in it—front stage and backstage, during business hours and after. That kind of consistency in character? It’s rare. And it’s why I love them.
Before the official programming began, they handed us something truly special— local market vendor money to shop from various small businesses before we took our seats for lunch and a series of insightful panels. Supporting small businesses before even sitting down to learn about growth? That’s the kind of thoughtful touch that makes an event memorable and dear. But then—the moment that took my breath away.
As the first award slide appeared on the screen, Columbus Fashion Academy logo pop up. For a second, time paused. It was a mix of excitement and gratitude. Out of all the incredible businesses in the room, our social enterprise was among the ten selected to receive a $1,000 mini grant. I will always remember that moment.
Receiving that check, knowing it came from an organization I admire so much, was already special. But getting to hold it alongside Abiona Harper , one of the most genuine, remarkable people I know, made it even better. We first met a year ago through Accelerate Columbus , and here we were, standing together again.
So yes, the check was great. The event was incredible. But what truly matters at the end of the day? The people. It’s always the people. The Backdrop of Life: A Story of Creativity, Resilience, and Self-Discovery

The Backdrop of Life: A Story of Creativity, Resilience, and Self-Discovery Sometimes, what appears to be the main event is simply the backdrop to a deeper, more meaningful story. Last year, I had the privilege of visiting beautiful Cuba (#Thankful for Michael Reese ' Artway nonprofit mission). I was there as a fashion artist, showcasing a mixed media collage in the "Letters from Ohio" Art Exhibition, styling locals, documenting photoshoots and absorbing the street fashion culture. Every day was fascinating on its on way, beauty was everywhere and although I saw ton of remarkable art and strolled multiple galleries and private studios, it wasn’t the art on the walls what moved me most, it was the life outside the walls, on the streets of Havana.
One afternoon, as I wandered through the streets, I stumbled upon kids practicing boxing. The scene was raw and unfiltered, filled with determination and grit. Little did I know, it would become a metaphor for my own journey.
This holiday season, my husband and I watched Rocky. As the iconic story unfolded, he remarked, “This is really a love story. Boxing is just the backdrop.” And as I heard his observation, suddenly it all clicked. Cuba was a backdrop in my life—a moment that shaped my understanding of who I am and what I bring to the world. Just like those kids practicing their jabs and hooks, I’ve been fighting my own battles—not with fists, but with creativity, resilience, and a refusal to give up. The reality is that until that trip to Cuba happened, I never considered myself an artist.
Despite a lifetime of creating—jewelry, clothing, photography, websites, branding packages and campaigns, you name it—I didn’t feel I had earned the title; after all I didn’t go to art school. I didn’t have a degree in art. I convinced myself that my work didn’t “qualify.” Instead, I chalked it up to being scrappy and resourceful. What I now recognize as imposter syndrome, held me back for years. That voice in my head told me I wasn’t an artist, even as people around me celebrated my work. I wore the label of underdog like armor, not realizing it was also weighing me down. This struggle didn’t exist in a vacuum. It was shaped by the battles I’ve fought throughout my life—battles that many of you might recognize, too:
The Battle for Self-Worth Growing up, I internalized the belief that formal qualifications defined success. As if having a credential from n Art School would be needed to make my art worth it. The Battle for Creative Freedom The fast-paced fashion industry often prioritizes conformity over authenticity. Fighting for the right to express myself and empower others to do the same has been a cornerstone of my work. The Battle with the Inner Critic Like so many creatives, I’ve faced the loud and persistent voice of self-doubt. Learning to reframe that voice—not as a barrier, but as a sign of growth—has been transformative. The Battle for Belonging As an immigrant, a woman minority, I’ve often felt out of place. These experiences have fueled my passion for creating spaces where others feel seen, valued, and connected. The Battle Against Injustice My commitment to sustainability and inclusion is deeply personal. I’ve seen the toll of overproduction and overconsumption. I’ve seen how fashion can hold people back fearful of trying and let themselves be creative. The Battle for Vision Building something as bold as Columbus Fashion Academy or The Fashion Community requires resilience. It’s a big fight against old ways of seeing and doing things. Both "Fashion" and "Creativity" are loaded words with lots of misrepresentation. Both concepts are highly misused and loaded with misleading ideas. The Backdrop of It All As I think back to those kids boxing in the streets of Havana, I see a reflection of all of us. We’re all fighting something—whether it’s self-doubt, societal expectations, or systemic challenges. But here’s the thing: the fight isn’t about proving we’re the best. It’s about showing up, again and again, for the things that matter. What I’ve come to realize is this: everything I create is connected to who I am. Every project, every design, every piece is an extension of my personal journey. And while the backdrop may have looked like boxing in Cuba, jewelry on a gallery wall, or upcycled fashion on a runway, the heart of my story—the love story—has always been about creating, connecting, and sharing education and power with the world. So here’s my question to you:

"The ability to be creative resides in everybody." These powerful words from the Huberman Lab —Ph.D., is a neuroscientist and tenured professor in the department of neurobiology, and by courtesy, psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford School of Medicine—strike at the heart of a profound truth: creativity is not reserved for a select few. It is within all of us, waiting to be activated.
Yet, for many, creativity feels abstract and elusive, as though it belongs only to artists, musicians, or fashion designers. At The Fashion Community, we are on a mission to demystify creativity, offering programs that unlock this innate ability in everyone. Creativity, after all, isn’t confined to only visual arts—it’s also about problem-solving, critical thinking, and innovation. It shows up in the kitchen, in the office, in childhood interactions, it can be everywhere. Every aspect of life benefits from the activation of creativity.
Take my dear friend Michele, for example. She’s a finance genius who often says, “I wish I was creative like you.” I always respond by pointing out her incredible creativity in finding ways to make delicious meals from leftover ingredients or managing tight budgets to make big projects happen. She’s an expert at rearranging existing elements into new forms—a perfect definition of creativity.
Creativity is Universal Problem-Solving
Research confirms that creativity is a core human trait. Moments of creativity are not isolated flashes of brilliance; they are the result of our minds connecting seemingly unrelated elements into a coherent whole. This is the essence of problem-solving and innovation.

This brings me to a personal fight: we must make the arts essential in schools, not an elective. Adding "A" for Arts to STEM—turning it into STEAM—is about more than semantics. Plenty of studies show that students who engage in creative subjects perform better academically and develop greater emotional intelligence. Unfortunately, many schools still marginalize the arts, and classify it as elective. This deprives students of the chance to develop the creative thinking skills they need to navigate life’s challenges. Creativity isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity.

When I reflect on my own life, I see how creativity has shaped everything I do. I’ve seen creativity spark in classrooms when children realize they can turn discarded materials into something magical. Stay Curious: The Key to Growth and Discovery

Imagine stepping into a world where every moment is a chance to uncover something new about yourself, the people around you, and the infinite possibilities ahead. That’s the magic of curiosity—it transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary. Today, I had the privilege of experiencing that magic firsthand as I spent the afternoon mentoring a high school student during her career shadowing experience.
From the moment she arrived, her enthusiasm was contagious. She peppered me with questions about the fashion industry—its challenges, its opportunities, and its power to shape not just how we look but how we feel and who we become. In her eyes, I saw the spark of someone standing at the edge of discovery.
I shared with her the lesson I share with everyone I mentor: stay curious. Let your curiosity be the compass that guides you through life. In the beginning, it will help you explore the vastness of an industry—like fashion—so you can find the area that truly excites you. Later, once you know your path, curiosity shifts gears, helping you refine your craft, master your niche, and continuously improve. It’s like building a runway to your dreams, one question at a time.
As we talked, the conversation naturally drifted to the importance of self-expression—how wearing what you love isn’t just about clothes but about understanding yourself. Fashion becomes a mirror, reflecting back your values, your passions, and your personality. The more you embrace what makes you unique, the more confident you feel, and the closer you get to living a life aligned with your purpose.

But this special day didn't end there, more happened. Curious yet?
When I got home, my son couldn’t wait to tell me that Spotify’s 2024 Wrapped was out. He gleefully grabbed my phone to check my stats and proudly announced that I had listened to 110,000 minutes of podcasts this year. That’s over 1,800 hours of learning and inspiration, putting me in the top 6% of listeners worldwide! I couldn’t help but laugh—of course, I love podcasts. They’re my daily dose of discovery, my constant companions as I drive to and from work, fall sleep and wake up.
This discovery reminded me of a creative project I started 1-2 years ago: Talking Fashion with the Dead. This podcast was my way of keeping the legacies of iconic fashion designers alive. Using AI, I simulated conversations with some of my favorites, tailoring questions based on their philosophies and teachings. I even brought students from Columbus Fashion Academy into these “interviews,” imagining how these legends might inspire the next generation. While the project is on pause for now, it remains close to my heart. Maybe one day, I’ll dust it off and bring it back to life.
Until then, I’ll keep soaking up inspiration from every conversation, every podcast, and every curious mind I meet. Curiosity has been a great ally—not just in fashion, but in life. It’s the secret to growth, the spark of creativity, and the glue that connects us to one another.

Last year, the students from Columbus Fashion Academy had the privilege of experiencing this firsthand during a fashion field trip to the Dublin Arts Council , an organization that embodies the transformative power of the arts.
The field trip began with an exclusive tour of their breathtaking exhibition, where our students explored the vibrant, intricate world of Indian textiles. The textures, colors, and stories woven into each fabric opened their eyes to a rich cultural history. The Fashion Community (TFC) was born out of a deep understanding of a challenge so many of us face—the struggle to truly connect, to feel seen, to advocate for ourselves, and to embrace who we are unapologetically. Founded by Priscila Teixeira, TFC was created to spark something greater: the courage to unlock creativity, the power to build confidence, and the drive to shape a more balanced, meaningful life. Too often, creativity is dismissed as frivolous, and sustainability feels overwhelming. But we believe both are essential for thriving—not just surviving—in today’s world.
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit human services agency, TFC is dedicated to fostering creativity and empowerment for individuals and organizations from all walks of life. Rooted in the impactful learning initiatives of Columbus Fashion Academy, TFC extends this legacy, championing creativity as a vital life skill—essential for building confidence, self-discovery, and connection.
